South Central Pacific

Playa Dominical is one of the country's most beautiful areas and has yet to be fully discovered. With turquoise ocean views to blazing sunsets full of colors that will capture your heart, the natural beauty of the area is unmatched. The town sits on the Pacific Ocean bounded to the north by the Río Barú and the Barú Park and Beach. With mountains to the east and a collection of beaches and coves to the south, the area sits in an envious geographical center. The palms and mangroves along the beach and the surrounding hills that rise from the Ocean almost hide the town from offshore, a benefit that results from Costa Rica’s Maritime Protection Zone.

The small beach community has been known for many years by dedicated international surfers due to its consistent first-class waves. For the past thirty years, Dominical has steadily gained in popularity as a destination for surfing and other nature-based activities. The dependable surf is developed due to the unique location of the river and it’s sandbars as well as the shape of the beach.

It has been in the past fifteen years that the town began to grow to accommodate 700 permanent residents with several small frequently visited restaurants and bars. Even with the development of the area as a resort destination, walking the main street of the town allows for many social interventions, a highlight of why people love the area.

The area surrounding Dominical, especially to the south, is sparsely populated. Because of this, the area remains natural and will remain natural with the master plans that have been presented to preserve this rare setting where the jungle meets the ocean. There are many attractions to visit in the area including horseback rides to spectacular waterfalls, hiking, and just watching the sun set into the ocean.

Additionally, there are plans to build a new International Airport south of Dominical which will create a boom not only in the value of property in the region but in the services required to host the many new visitors that will be flying directly to the Osa Peninsula. Centrally located, it is easy to access Manuel Antonio National Park and National Park Marina Ballena, just to name a few. Access to the north is by a dirt road, however, this is about to change with the completion of the new road to Quepos only 45 kilometers away. Dominical and the surrounding area will be much more accessible to the 110,000 tourists that visit Manuel Antonio National Park each year. In a country full of unique scenery and tropical landscapes, Dominical remains a special place to visit and live.
